Queen Anne's Lace

Queen Anne's Lace grows
All along the picket fence
Accompanied by fern
And English clover.

As the dew gives the whole world a morning rinse,
The early morning voices
Talk it over.

In the yard there are
Summer flowers here and there
Surrounded by an uncut
Summer lawn.

The oak tree and the apple make a handsome pair
In these
The first, dim, hopeful rays
Of dawn.

And I can't help thinking
When I think of you
How you used to long for someplace
where the air was clear.

And if I could write you,
Even just a post card,
I'd say "Hello,
I'm doing fine.
Wish you were here."

Queen Anne's Lace grows
All along the picket fence
Accompanied by fern
And English clover.

As the dew gives the whole world a morning rinse,
The early morning voices
Talk it over.

And I can't help thinking
How much you'd like it here,
Surrounded by an uncut
Summer lawn;

For I have never seen a day so bright and clear
As in these
First, dim, hopeful rays
Of dawn.
