Youth's Companion
I just received The Youth's Companion.
I thought it was coming never.
It's been seven days since the last one came.
I've been waiting forever.
I'm glad it's almost time for bed,
For there're wonderous things to be read.
My bedside lamp will brightly glow
As I look for friends I know.
CHORUS
I turn the pages of The Youth's Companion
Six young orphans, away from war's alarm,
Growing up together on the Old Squire's farm.
There's Halstead and Addison,
Theodora known as Doad,
And Ellen known as Nell
Along the old Corners Road.
There's Kit and little Wealthy.
It's such a lot of fun to be
Part of their lives on the Old Squire's farm.
Past the first page or two.
I'm looking for my favorite stories,
As I always do.
A Wakeful Night, The Riddle of Halstead,
The Vermifuge Bottle, Making Mug Bread:
There's sweet adventure,
Happy and free,
For six young orphans and me.
CHORUS
Six young orphans, away from war's alarm,
Growing up together on the Old Squire's farm.
There's Halstead and Addison,
Theodora known as Doad,
And Ellen known as Nell
Along the old Corners Road.
There's Kit and little Wealthy.
It's such a lot of fun to be
Part of their lives on the Old Squire's farm.
Before next week brings a new one to our door,
I'll read this Companion seven times or more.
I'll look at all the pages,
The odds and the evens,
But the ones I read again are those
By Mr. C. A. Stephens.
As I close the pages of The Youth's Companion,
I hear Mother on the stair.
She tucks me in and kisses my cheek
And gently tossles my hair.
She blows out the light beside my bed,
And the stars shine in for light instead,
And it's sweet, sweet dreams,
Peaceful and free,
For six young orphans and me.
CHORUS
Six young orphans, away from war's alarm,
Growing up together on the Old Squire's farm.
There's Halstead and Addison,
Theodora known as Doad,
And Ellen known as Nell
Along the old Corners Road.
There's Kit and little Wealthy.
It's such a lot of fun to be
Part of their lives on the Old Squire's farm.
