So There

Sure. Okay. South Paris won the horse race. But can they play football?

November 9th, 1897

South Paris High School and Norway High School played a hard fought game of football on the fair grounds Saturday afternoon, resulting in favor of Norway, 6 - 0. The game was played in 15-minute halves, Walter L. Gray referee. In the first half, after Norway had carried the ball within a short distance of the goal, it was lost to South Paris, which steadily advanced it to the middle of Norway's territory, when the time expired, without either side having scored.

In the second half, Norway, taking the ball from South Paris's kick-off, advanced it steadily down the field, making a touchdown and kicking the goal. After the second kick-off, Norway lost the ball to South Paris, and it was advanced to within three yards of the line, when, at this critical stage of the game, South Paris failed to make the necessary gains and lost the ball to Norway about a minute before the expiration of the half. There was no more scoring.

It was a well-fought game, and South Paris is by no means ashamed of the showing made.

Hurray for Norway! Great goal-line defense, guys! Way to hang in there! However, if you scored and kicked the extra point, how come the final score was 6 - 0? No matter. Norway rules! Forget about South Paris and their dern two-minute trotter.
